SALT LAKE CITY — Sunday is baby giraffe Willow’s last day at Utah’s Hogle Zoo before she joins a giraffe herd at the Jacksonville Zoo in Florida.

Willow, 19 months old, will join a herd of two males and five females ranging in age from 18 months old to 20 years.

Willow, 6 feet tall as a baby, is now described by zookeepers as a 10-foot “firecracker.”

In the wild, giraffes form social herds but individuals will move in and out of the groupings as they please. Young giraffes typically leave their mothers at 15 to 18 months of age.

When Willow is older, the plan is that she will become a mom.

Hogle Zoo, located at 2600 Sunnyside Ave., is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
