FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Fresno police say a man shot and killed his estranged wife and her boyfriend outside a church and then killed himself at his home.
The Fresno Bee reports Manuel Garcia, 64, waited Sunday for Martha Garcia, 61, and her unidentified 51-year-old companion to leave Mass at St. Alphonsus Church in Fresno. In the parking lot, he shot them both in the head.
Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says Martha Garcia died at the scene. Her boyfriend died later at a hospital.
Manuel Garcia then returned to his home, 11 blocks away, where he began sending his daughter text messages saying he had killed her mother and was going to kill himself.
Police officers arriving at the home heard a gunshot. They used a robot to determine he was unconscious and to remove the gun from his hand. He was pronounced dead after they entered the house.
Dyer said Manuel Garcia and Martha Garcia had been married for 43 years. She filed for divorce about a month ago.
