Do you think Phil Murphy’s win is bad news for Trump?

Have political winds begun to blow?

Many are saying the wins for Democrats in New Jersey and Virginia are bad news for President Donald Trump and the GOP.

Phil Murphy wound up thrashing Republican Kim Guadagno on election night. But was it a repudiation of Trump, Gov. Chris Christie, or both?

Christie, the once popular Republican governor, has seen his approval rating slip to historic lows in the past several years since the Bridgegate scandal. Many saw Guadagno as his “accomplice” as his lieutenant governor.

But Christie’s friendship with Trump could be seen as part of Christie’s downfall, and therefore, the reason Guadagno lost so badly on Tuesday.

Many voters weren’t really all that excited about Murphy, but saw him as a lesser of two evils.

For those who loathe, Trump, this was the first time voters in New Jersey have had a chance to make their voices heard at the polls since he took office.

Though New Jersey went Democrat for governor this year, that is not uncommon, as the state has been known to switch sides at least every two terms, at least since the 1960s.

In Virginia, Democrat Ralph Northam won a hard-fought race for governor and Democrats picked up at least 14 seats in the 100-member House of Delegates, with five races still close to call as of last night, according to the Associated Press. That puts Democrats at 48 seats out of 100. Democrats there retain a chance of gaining control of the chamber for the first time in 20 years.

Some volunteers helping Northam said Trump’s victory had spurred them to get involved in a political campaign for the first time.

“The Virginia result shows that Trump is a national catastrophe for the GOP…Next year’s congressional races, which will be a referendum on Trump, will be an NJ GOP nightmare,” said Alan Steinberg, former EPA administrator for New Jersey under Christie Whitman.

“There’s no doubt that Trump was a decisive factor in this enthusiasm gap. This is the first time I think we’ve seen national politics play a role in local races the year after the presidential election,” said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth poll.

Many Republicans are now worried about next year’s mid-term elections after the embarrassing losses.
