SALT LAKE CITY — West Valley police say they have arrested two 16-year-olds in connection with the death of a boy killed as he sped away from gunfire in a minivan full of his friends.

Irving Alexis Chuba, 15, and a Chihuahua in the van were killed in the Jan. 18 shooting. West Valley police have not released the names of the teen boys booked into the Salt Lake County Detention Center Thursday for investigation of murder.

Detectives determined in interviews that the teens in different cars were members of rivals gangs, West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku said. She declined to elaborate.

On Jan. 18 about 9:45 p.m., Chuba was driving when he encountered the suspects’ vehicle near 3500 South and Bangerter Highway, according to West Valley police.

Chuba indicated to his friends that he knew at least one person in the other vehicle and attempted “to lose them,” Vainuku has said.

The other driver followed at a high speed, running several red lights and weaving in and out of traffic. When traffic slowed, the other driver pulled alongside Chuba’s van and fired multiple shots, according to West Valley officers.

Chuba was hit at least once. As the minivan turned onto 4100 South, it crashed into another vehicle and eventually hit a power pole.

Detectives received few tips in the case, Vainuku said, and the suspects were found through “exhaustive efforts.”
