I am voting against the recall of Judge Aaron Persky for the following reasons:
1) The sentence Persky gave Brock Turner followed the law and the recommendation of the probation department. Recalling a judge should only be used in the most extreme cases of judicial incompetence. This case certainly does not qualify.
2) Cases such as this one are complex. The public is not privy to all of the evidence, facts and testimony. Removing a judge should be left to individuals who are knowledgeable about the intricacies of the applicable laws.
Letter: Which is worse: ‘housing crisis’ or ‘gridlock crisis’?
Letter: Drug death of 3-year-old Mariah demands action
Letter: Next GOP’ll rail at our debt, cut Social Security, Medicare
Letter: Judge Persky followed all the judicial guidelines
Letter: Parade or help low-income taxpayers? Choices matter
3) Rather than recalling Judge Persky, it is much more effective to change the laws that allowed the sentencing in the first place. This has already been done by the Legislature, expanding the definition of rape and implementing mandatory prison sentences for sexual assault.
I think this recall is a waste of time and resources, and will be voting against it.
