“Black Panther” isn’t exactly slinking into Bay Area theater as if were a timid, little pussycat.

Riding a huge wave of ecstatic reviews and rocking some serious advance ticket sales, Oakland-born director Ryan Coogler’s superhero odyssey — with an almost entirely African-American cast — is poised to all but claw away at box-office records this weekend.

What else to see

Of the other releases, my gotta-see pick is Nick Park’s “Early Man,” a goofball animated caveman comedy from the creator of the endearing “Wallace and Gromit” series. ‘Nuff said.

Meanwhile, the two other general releases might pique interest from specific audiences. The faith-based biblical epic “Samson” with Billy Zane as King Balek and, yes, “The Bionic Woman” herself — Lindsay Wagner — as Samson’s momma, and Rutger Hauer in a supporting role makes me awfully curious, while “Detective Chinatown 2,” a zany buddy cop dramedy sequel set in New York, sounds kind of fun.

Stream these

If you’re looking for a good cry, a REALLY good cry — one that might embarrass the hell out of you — check out in the confines of your home Netflix’s “Irreplaceable You,” a four-hankie affair about a dying fiancee (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) who plays matchmaker for her adorably geeky husband-to-be (Michiel Huisman). It drops Feb. 16. Christopher Walken, Kate McKinnon and Steve Coogan couldn’t be finer in supporting roles.

Over on Amazon Prime, Steven Soderbergh’s frisky heist caper “Logan Lucky” will make you smile and sweat. It’s a sly affair about a robbery at a Charlotte Speedway and boasts one killer with-it cast (Channing Tatum, Daniel Craig, Adam Driver, Hilary Swank, Riley Keough and so on). A perfect remedy for a rough week. Drops Feb. 16.
