Stephen Hawking, the famous scientist, is dead at the age of 76, his children have confirmed.

According to Sky News, Hawking is survived by three children, Lucy, Robert and Tim, who said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world. He once said, ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him forever.”

Hawking died on Tuesday March 13, 2018. A spokesman for Hawking’s family also confirmed the news to the BBC. According to, “Scientist Stephen Hawking is known for his groundbreaking work with black holes and relativity, and is the author of several popular science books including ‘A Brief History of Time.’”

That book “became an account of cosmology for the masses and offered an overview of space and time, the existence of God and the future,” reports. Hawking was born in England in 1942.

Hawking’s cause of death has not yet been released. However, Hawking famously suffered from ALS, which left him in a wheelchair. “For much of his time in the public eye, though, he has been confined to a wheelchair by a form of the motor-neuron disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). And since 1985 he has had to speak through his trademark computer system—which he operates with his cheek—and have around-the-clock care,” reported Scientific American.
