This in from Michael Russo of the Athletic: “Former St. Cloud State defenseman Kevin Gravel will be signing with the #oilers.”
How many Edmonton Oilers fans had heard of this player before now? Not me.
Gravel appears to fill the bill as a seventh d-man for the team, though it’s not immediately apparent why the Oil would not just have gone with Eric Gryba, instead of buying out Gryba, who just signed with New Jersey. Now Edmonton must pay for Gravel as well as the buy-out fee for Grbya, $300,000 for two years. Hmmmm. Not exactly a sharp piece of business, not unless Gravel is much better than Gryba.
From his amateur days, here is the Hockeysfuture report on him: “Gravel has very good skating for his size, including a good first step. His defensive positioning is exceptional and has become a real staple and defining factor to his game. He should have more points than he does given his puck skills and shot.”
