Three people, including a 16- and 17-year-old, were arrested earlier this week and three handguns were seized, Jersey City police said.
On July 8, police responding to a call of shots fired on Liggions Lane at 7 p.m. arrested 25-year-old Darius Hemingway and a 16-year-old on weapons and drug counts, Jersey City police spokesman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said.
Both Hemingway and the 16-year-old were charged with unlawful possession of a handgun, marijuana possession and resisting arrest. Hemingway was additionally charged with possession of prohibited weapons. The 16-year-old was also charged with possession of firearms by a minor.
The following night, police arrested a 17-year-old on numerous drug charges and weapons counts on Lexington Avenue, between Kennedy Boulevard and Bergen Avenue, Wallace-Scalcione said.
The gun was reported stolen out of Durham County in North Carolina, Wallace-Scalcione said.
In a tweet Tuesday, Mayor Steve Fulop said, “Another example of where these guns come from that we see on our streets. We need federal legislation – NOW.” Last week Jersey City officials said that shootings were down 27 percent over the first six months of 2018, compared to same time period of last year.
Among the charges the 17-year-old faces are drug possession, two counts of possession with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm and and possession of a firearm by a minor.
In a separate incident, a 15-year-old was charged with shooting a man early Saturday on Fremont Avenue.
