Finland tied the game late then won 2-1 in overtime to eliminate Canada from the World Junior Hockey Championship.
Aarne Talvitie scored the winner for Finland at 5:30 of overtime after Canada’s captain Max Comtois failed to score on a penalty shot earlier in the extra frame.
Finland forced overtime with 46 seconds left in regulation when Eeli Tolvanen banked a puck from behind the net and past Canada goalie Michael DiPietro.
Ian Mitchell scored Canada’s only goal of the game early in the second period.
The loss marks the first time in 13 tournaments that Canada won’t win a medal in a world juniors they are hosting.
Finland will now face Switzerland in the semifinals after the Swiss upset Sweden 2-0 earlier on Wednesday.
