Transportation Minister Brian Mason announced plans to expand Deerfoot Trail Thursday through the addition of 21 km of new lanes.
The added northbound and southbound lanes will be between Beddington Trail and Anderson/Bow Bottom Trail, Mason said at a provincial government announcement Thursday.
The upgrades will also include the addition of lanes to interchanges at Memorial Drive, 17th Avenue, Glenmore Trail, Southland Drive and Anderson/Bow Bottom Trail.
“As anyone who drives will tell you, Deerfoot is over capacity, particularly during rush hours, and the problem is getting worse,” Mason said at a news conference in Calgary.
The expansion is expected to create 2,330 construction jobs, and comes with a $478-million price tag.
Mason said the province expects to begin construction in 2023.
