Harry Styles fans won’t get their wish after all – the former One Direction star has turned down the chance to play Prince Eric in the live action remake of The Little Mermaid according to new reports.

According to The Wrap, sources close to the production claimed Harry ‘is a fan of the project but respectfully declined’, after it was claimed earlier in the day that he had been confirmed for the role.

The DisInsider had previously claimed he had signed on to star opposite Halle Bailey’s Ariel in the latest Disney remake, however Metro.co.uk understands he won’t be appearing in the film.

Fans had been campaigning for him to get the role – which, let’s be honest, he’s totally made for – since news of the remake was confirmed.

The remake wouldn’t have been Harry’s first foray into film after his role in Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed 2017 war movie, Dunkirk.

The singer was also in talks to play Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming biopic but lost out on the role to Austin Butler, it was recently announced.

The Little Mermaid remake is the latest Disney classic to be given the 2019 treatment, following on from The Lion King, which also attracted big names including Beyonce and Donald Glover to the cast.

Although Prince Eric doesn’t have any songs in the original movie, if Harry had indeed signed on to the cast it was likely some would have been written in for the character by Alan Menken, who is working on the updated soundtrack.

Javier Bardem is also said to be in talks to play Ariel’s father, King Triton, as well as Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina who are said to be auditioning for Ursula, Flounder and Scuttle.

Rob Marshall has signed up to direct the upcoming film which is due to begin production in January in the Caribbean, and is likely to be released in 2020.

We can’t think of anyone more perfect for the role than Harry – he’s got the hair, the charm and the smile down already, so it’s a shame he decided not to take the role as he is made for the job.

Metro.co.uk has reached out to Harry’s management for comment. Got a showbiz story?
