Liverpool and Chelsea are set to face off for the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night.
The annual fixture sees the winners of the Champions League and Europa League face each other, and they will meet at Besiktas Park in Turkey
Both teams will be coming to the fixture are mixed results in the opening weekend of the new Premier League season.
Liverpool enjoyed a comfortable 4-1 win against Norwich on Friday evening, while Frank Lampard saw his Chelsea team beaten 4-0 against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Who is the Super Cup referee?
French referee Stephanie Frappart will be taking charge of the match between Liverpool and Chelsea on Wednesday night.
She will become the first woman to take charge of a major men’s European match.
Stephanie is used to being involved in big matches, as she also officiated in the Women’s World Cup final between USA and the Netherlands in July.
The 35-year-old has been working as a referee since 2009 and early in her career she took charge of several matches in the third division of men’s football in France.
She then progressed to Ligue 2 in 2014 and in April 2019 she took charge of her first Ligue 1 match when SC Amiens faced RC Strasbourg.
In the Super Cup fixture she will be working as part of an-female team that will be managing the game on the pitch, with Manuela Nicolosi and Michelle O’Neill working as assistant referees.
Speaking about her appointment, UEFA chief refereeing officer Roberto Rosetti said: ‘She has the ability to officiate on the biggest stage, as she proved at this year’s Women’s World Cup final.
‘I hope this match in Istanbul will provide her with yet more experience as she enters the prime of her refereeing career.’
The only other female referee to take charge of a competitive men’s match for UEFA was Nicole Petignat who officiated in three UEFA Cup qualifying round matches between 2004 and 2009.
