Apple has introduced a new Apple Care plan – for earphones. Till date, the company offers such plans only for its smartphones, PCs and tablets.
The company has launched a new AppleCare+ plan which will cover AirPods and select Beats earphones and headphones. It will cost 29 dollars (around 24 pounds) and provides a two-year extended warranty on the devices. If a consumer subscribes to the plan, he/she will get warranty up to two incidents of accidental damage along with the hardware coverage.
However, the service doesn’t cover charging cases, which means that if you damage the charging case, you will end up spending money on the repairs or new one, even if you have AppleCare+. Bizarrely, it does include the charging cords.
If you are interested in buying the plan, you can purchase it online from Apple’s website or go to any Apple store. You can simply add it to your cart while purchasing the earphones or call 0800 048 0408 within 60 days of purchasing the earphones.
The one thing, it doesn’t cover is the theft or loss of earphones. This is an issue since the AirPods are totally wireless and have such a design that makes them susceptible to being dropped inadvertently.
In fact, the New York Subway is getting choked with AirPods on tracks, which cause delays as they are detected by the sensor system and make the train stop.
Apple charges 69 dollars to replace a lost AirPod. If you lose the pair, it will cost you 138 dollars.
New iPhones woo users to Apple television and games
One of the biggest issues with AirPods is that they are not customisable. Different kinds of wingtips and earbuds are not available for the earphones even in 2019, while Samsung has them out for its Level U earphones since ages.
The structure of AirPods makes them hang, a little precariously off the edges of people’s ears. The fact that they are tiny and untethered makes losing them very easy.
While the new AppleCare+ plan is a step in the right direction, much needs to be done to make them salvageable.
