The Chelsea full-back played alongside Terry for five seasons at Stamford Bridge before the defender’s departure for Aston Villa in 2017, winning two Premier League titles, a League Cup and Europa League title.
The Spanish international was named as Chelsea’s new club captain this season following the summer departure of Gary Cahill, and the 30-year-old admits playing and training alongside the Blues’ iconic skipper had a huge influence on his game and approach to his role as the club’s new leader.
“John Terry was part of my career here at Chelsea,” he told Chelsea’s club website.
“He was the captain and I had the chance to see him every day on and off the pitch. The way he trained and the way he was living the team.
“He was a big influence and it is something that you take with you and you put in your bag. It is a big help.”
