The home-standing Oilers came out looking like deer in the headlights, allowing a pair of odd-man rushes after bad pinches in the first minute of play. That turned out to be a harbinger of things to come, as the Chicago Blackhawks attacked relentlessly and took advantage of numerous Edmonton mistakes to pound home four first-period goals to totally obliterate an early Oilers lead. Two more in the second stretched their advantage to 6-2, and the Hawks cruised from there. Two Edmonton goals in garbage time narrowed the final margin to 6-4, but the outcome was never in doubt.
