There’s been plenty of talk recently about NHL insider Brian Lawton’s prediction that the Edmonton Oilers will trade two out of four Top 4 d-men this summer, but the Alpha Move for GM Ken Holland will be to find a way to move out Kris Russell.

My own prediction is that Holland will be able to pull off such a move. How so?

Here are the factors I’m thinking about:


Russell is now 33, he put up not one goal and just nine assists last year in 55 games and he’ll have a $4 million cap hit. That doesn’t sound like an attractive trade pick-up, but the fact is that Russell can still play NHL-quality hockey. That’s the key factor in moving him out. He can help some other team, so they’ll be open to acquiring him.
