The leader of Alberta’s public inquiry into alleged foreign-funded campaigns against the oil and gas industry plans to ask for another extension, but says he won’t try to determine whether those campaigns spread false or misleading information.
Commissioner Steve Allan has advised Energy Minister Sonya Savage his final report will not be completed by Oct. 30 due to COVID-19 delays and the need to outline fair procedures,
according to the inquiry website
. Allan’s original deadline of July 2 was extended in late June and the inquiry’s budget was boosted to $3.5 million from $2.5 million.
The commissioner has not yet determined how much extra time he needs. Allan has not sought a further increase in funding, “and will only do so if circumstances develop in such a way as to necessitate it,” according to the website.
