NDP education critic Sarah Hoffman holds a FOIP document on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2020, that she says reveal that Education Minister Adriana LaGrange is hiding documents related to the COVID-19 response.

Multiple public servants made mistakes when responding to freedom of information requests from the official Opposition related to the school re-entry plan, the Alberta government admitted Wednesday, promising a new search. 

The news came the same day NDP education critic Sarah Hoffman asked information and privacy commissioner Jill Clayton to investigate why three requests for information came back empty, claiming there were no records.

In a letter to Clayton dated Wednesday, Anthony Lemphers, the assistant deputy minister of FOIP and information management, and Jeff Willan, assistant deputy minister strategic services and governance, say it appears the public servant with the education department who would normally search through the online system with the education minister’s correspondence was on holidays and the person covering for them “did not correctly search files, which resulted in records being excluded.”

In Alberta, freedom of information requests go to individual government departments to search for records and then eventually are managed by Service Alberta staff.
