PALO ALTO – Police on Thursday arrested one man and were seeking a second in connection with a burglary at a Palo Alto bicycle shop.

At 4:32 a.m., a silent alarm activated at the Cardinal Bike Shop at 1955 El Camino Real, the Palo Alto Police Department said in a news release. Officers arrived moments later to find a pair of men leaving the business through a smashed front window.

One man was arrested after a brief foot pursuit. The other man left the scene in a white Ford Transit T-250, which police later learned had been reported stolen a day earlier in San Jose, police said.

Police said the vehicle sped through Stanford University, leaving tools behind in its wake. At 6:20 a.m., officers found the vehicle abandoned in the 800 block of Bowdoin Street. The vehicle was processed for evidence and returned to its owner.

An investigation revealed that the men entered the shop by smashing a window, police said. The men then allegedly took an undisclosed amount of cash from the register.

The Palo Alto Police Department released this photog of tools that fell out of a burglary suspect’s vehicle on Thursday, April 28, 2022. Police believe it is possible the tools may have been stolen and asked anyone who recognizes them to call 650-329-2413.

“Police recovered the stolen money on the arrested suspect and returned it to the business owner,” police said.

The man who was arrested, a 36-year-old San Jose resident, was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail in San Jose on charges of commercial burglary, possession of a stolen vehicle, conspiracy, committing a felony while out on bail and resisting arrest.

A detailed description of the second man was not available Thursday.
