A suspected heroin dealer was arrested in Novato during a bust by the Marin County drug squad and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Almin Ferhatovic, 22, of Oakland remained in custody Sunday at the Marin County Jail. He is being held without bail pending his transfer to federal custody.

The county drug unit, the Marin County Major Crimes Task Force, opened the investigation last year after learning of a dealer “distributing a large amount of heroin in the Bay Area and Marin,” said sheriff’s Sgt. Ryan Petersen. Investigators arranged undercover purchases of heroin from the suspect.

“The investigation continued into the end of 2019 as Ferhatovic told the detective about his drug distribution operation and methods,” said Petersen, assistant commander of the task force. “Due to the amount of heroin that Ferhatovic had access to, the DEA was asked to assist and worked in partnership with the task force.”

Detectives set up a bust for Friday and placed Ferhatovic under surveillance. Investigators arrested him at the Vintage Oaks Shopping Center in Novato and found about 6 ounces of suspected heroin and an ounce of suspected cocaine in his possession.

Two other people who had apparently arrived for a drug deal fled in their car, Petersen said. When they reached a dead end, they tried to run, but detectives chased them down.

The DEA also executed a search warrant at Ferhatovic’s residence in the 5000 block of Leona Street in Oakland and seized additional evidence.
