Geranium in Copenhagen, Denmark, has been named the world’s best restaurant.
The World’s 50 Best Restaurants announced its annual rankings on Monday in London.
Russian restaurants were notably absent from the list.
The best restaurant in the world is Copenhagen’s Geranium, according to the World’s 50 Best Restaurants annual rankings.
The restaurant follows in the footsteps of fellow Danish eatery, Noma, which claimed the title last year. The rankings were announced on Monday at an awards show hosted by Stanley Tucci in London.
Geranium has a somewhat usual location. After relocating from King’s Garden in 2007, it set up shop in 2010 on the eighth floor of the city’s national soccer stadium, overlooking Fælledparken gardens.
Since opening its doors to the public, Geranium also became the first Danish restaurant to win three Michelin stars.
Throughout 2022, Geranium has been serving a meatless menu for the first time. Rasmus Kofoed, Geranium’s head chef, stopped eating meat five years ago.
This year, Geranium’s menu has focused on local vegetables and seafood from organic and biodynamic farms in Denmark and other parts of Scandinavia, according to its website.
Russian restaurants were notably absent from this year’s list. In 2021, two Moscow restaurants made it onto the list, in 25th and 30th place.
Organizers of the awards responded swiftly to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. They announced that they were moving the awards from their original location in Moscow to London.
However, as the voting took place before the war in Ukraine, Russian votes were included, the director of content for World’s 50 Best Restaurants William Drew, told Bloomberg.
American honorees in the top 30 included New York-based restaurants Atomix and Le Bernardin.
