SAN JOSE — A health care titan is eyeing major new medical facilities and a big revamp of an existing hospital complex in San Jose, according to plans that have been submitted to city officials.
Good Samaritan Hospital, which operates a big medical center in southwest San Jose, has proposed wide-ranging changes at its campus on Samaritan Drive, a very preliminary proposal on file with the city shows.
The development and renovation efforts would occur on parcels with addresses of 2425 and 2333 Samaritan Drive, a hospital campus that is near the interchange of state routes 17 and 85.
The hospital, whose owner is Tennessee-based HCA Healthcare, wants to add 915,000 square feet of new hospital facilities as well as undertake a “site overhaul” of the existing hospital that totals 450,700 square feet, the preliminary plans show.

The revamp of the existing Good Sam hospital would include a “seismic upgrade” to comply with state earthquake regulations, according to the city documents.
“Our recent outreach with regulatory and community leaders is an initial step for us to learn what’s possible to, potentially, increase campus sustainability and enhance patient experience as we comply with the seismic mandate,” Good Samaritan said in comments emailed to this news organization.
Preliminary proposals are often filed with the city of San Jose to gauge the reaction of residents, community groups, municipal political leaders and planning staffers to a development or renovation concept.
Initial plans can be revised significantly depending on the early-stage reactions.
The development of new medical facilities would occur through “phased additions,” according to the planning proposal.
The existing main hospital complex is at 2425 Good Samaritan and occupies 13.2 acres, according to Santa Clara County real estate records.
The Good Sam campus also includes a big surface parking lot on an adjacent site totaling 5.9 acres at 2333 Good Samaritan Drive, the county documents show. The parking lot is on the east side of the existing hospital.
It wasn’t clear from the preliminary proposal where the phased new medical facilities would be developed, although the surface parking lot would appear to be a candidate for new construction.
Surface parking also exists on the west side of the existing hospital.
The timing to potentially develop new hospital facilities and renovate the existing hospital wasn’t disclosed in the preliminary proposal.
