BRENTWOOD — A student temporarily took over control of school-room projectors earlier this week and used it to display racist images in those classes, according to school district officials.

The incident happened at a school in the Brentwood Union School District.

District Superintendent Dr. Dana Eaton in an emailed statement said the student briefly “hijacked” the projector in the classrooms of three teachers, and that the projectors “displayed racist images.”

“Teachers acted immediately and were able to stop the projections from continuing,” Eaton said. “When the principal became aware, she immediately contacted our technology department both to investigate the incident and work to eliminate access for this to happen again.”

Eaton did not disclose where the racist display took place. ABC7 reported that it happened at Edna Middle School and that parents said it was not the first time. Eaton said the investigation so far shows “all three incidents happened in the same day.”

The district plans to involve police after the “technology part of the investigation” is finished, Eaton said.

“Our district is a place where everyone belongs, and we want all to feel welcome,” Eaton said. “We are continuing our investigations and expect it to conclude soon. We will not tolerate any type of racist or hateful behavior, and the consequences will be severe for any student involved.”
