BERKELEY — A man who grabbed a woman who had just crossed a street and threatened to sexually assault her is being sought by police.

A video of the confrontation has been released by police in an attempt to identify the suspect, who fled on foot before officers could respond.

Police said that about 5:03 p.m. Tuesday a woman in her 20s had just finished crossing the street from the UC Berkeley campus at the intersection of Hearst and Euclid avenues when the man approached her from behind.

On the north side of Hearst Avenue adjacent to the Lower Hearst parking structure, the man grabbed the woman by the arm and threatened to sexually assault her, police said. The woman was able to pull away from the man and run to a nearby cafe for safety.

The man followed the woman into the cafe, but staff were able to block him from the woman and call police.

The suspect fled and was last seen walking back onto the UC campus.

He is described as White, bald, in his 40s, about 6 feet tall with a thin to medium build and no facial hair. He wore a black jacket, white shirt, jeans and white sneakers.
