GILROY — A Gilroy man who confronted a person attempting to steal his car was shot dead Tuesday morning and a suspect was later arrested after a police chase, police said.

Officers found the 33-year-old with an apparent gunshot wound in his chest at about 12:24 a.m. on the 1300 block of Pheasant Drive, according to a press release. Police were called to the block on a report of a hit-and-run.

Authorities said the victim was shot after confronting a suspect in the act of stealing his car. The suspect allegedly shot the victim during the confrontation and fled in the victim’s vehicle. The California Highway Patrol later located the stolen vehicle and arrested the suspect after a pursuit south of Salinas.
